Tubular outgrowth from a cell on the surface
of a plant root. It is a delicate structure,
which survives for a few days only and does
not develop into a root. New root hairs are
continually being formed near the root tip to
replace the ones that are lost. The majority
of land plants possess root hairs, which
serve greatly to increase the surface area
available for the absorption of water and
mineral salts from the soil. The layer of the
root's epidermis that produces root hairs is
known as the piliferous layer.
