  3. which survives for a few days only and does
  4. not develop into a root. New root hairs are
  5. continually being formed near the root tip to
  6. replace the ones that are lost. The majority
  7. of land plants possess root hairs, which
  8. serve greatly to increase the surface area
  9. available for the absorption of water and
  10. mineral salts from the soil. The layer of the
  11. root's epidermis that produces root hairs is
  12. known as the piliferous layer.
